Venue: 39 Clow Street. Enter by rear of 39 Clow Street, marked Public Entrance, from 1.30pm to 2.00pm.
The Guest Speaker is John Woolley – Memories of Gartsides and Max Curtain.
Max Curtain, who passed away in 2013 at the age of 91 was a Dandenong identity – Saddened by children drowning in Dandenong Creek more than 50 years ago, Mr Curtain acted to prevent it happening again by putting in a pool in his backyard in Wedge Street. He gave swimming lessons to youngsters, who in return taught the next group how to swim. Mr Curtain’s two-hectare block eventually became a fully fledged sports and social centre, including boxing and basketball. He bought a bus to move young teams around and held dance classes for parents to keep the families together. https://dandenong.starcommunity.com.au/journal/2013-08-05/tributes-flow-for-dandenong-legend-max-curtain/
Max Curtain’s boat , the Edwina May, is the boat marooned at the Tooradin airfield. Gartsides had a cannery in Dingley and in the 1960s Ken Gartside operated the French Island barge.
