SUMMARY:Coast: Aspendale to Carrum Looking Back display
DESCRIPTION:Chelsea and District Historical Society present their latest display – Coast : Aspendale to Carrum Looking Back. \nWhere: Chelsea Courthouse\, 6 The Strand\, Chelsea.\nWhen:\nFriday\, November 22\, 2024 – 12 noon to 3.00pm\nSaturday\, November 23\, 2024 – 10.00am – 3.00pm\nSunday\, November 24\, 2024 – 10.00am -3.00pm. \nThe exhibition will feature old photographs and stories about the local area and how its development has been shaped by our magnificent beaches. Our books will be on sale and you are welcome to become a member of the Society. Free entry and everyone is welcome! \nThe following snapshot of history is paraphrased from “Chelsea: a Beachside Community” by Frank McGuire.\nBefore white settlers arrived\, first nations people\, The Bunurong\, knew the area as Karrum Karrum. Kangaroos and emu were to be found along the lightly wooded coast\, colonies of koalas were in the Manna Gums along the Isles of Wannak Laddin (modern day Chelsea Heights) and the swamp was teeming with birdlife. From the top of Olivers Hill the Bunurong would have seen the ribbon of sand running from present day Aspendale to Carrum. The swamp stretched about fifteen kilometres north/south from the Mordialloc Creek and ran about five kilometres inland. Development began with fishing and cattle farming and as people discovered the beautiful beaches\, the area became a popular seaside resort. By the turn of the twentieth century there was camping on the foreshore and guest houses were established\, and the draining of the swamp commenced in 1879 with the Patterson Cut. Land sales began in 1865 and the swamp was thrown open for selection in 1871. \n \nClick on flyer to enlarge.

SUMMARY:The Importance of Oral Histories
DESCRIPTION:Historian Dr Nicolette Snowden will explain how to record oral histories and examine their value in both a community and professional context. Nicolette is an experienced oral historian\, researcher\, and writer. She is a member of the Professional Historians Association (Vic & Tas) and Oral History Victoria. \nThe program venue\, Benga\, was home to Australia’s first oral history centre. The centre resulted in a collection of recordings and transcripts of more than 300 interviews with a cross-section of people sharing their moment in time. These interviews now form part of Council’s Civic and Cultural Heritage Collection. Over the years\, these oral histories have formed the basis of many social history exhibitions and have provided an invaluable research tool for those studying Australia’s cultural heritage. Council’s Heritage Collection Officer will provide attendees with an overview of this important collection. \nA light afternoon tea will be held following the presentations. When: Thursday\, November 28\, 2024 from 2.00pm to 4.00pm. Location: Benga\, Heritage Hill Museum & Historic Gardens\, 66 McCrae Street\, Dandenong \nA free event\, bookings are required as places are limited  https://www.trybooking.com/events/landing/1311016 \nEnquiries: Council’s heritage team on 8571 1000 or culturalheritage@cgd.vic.gov.au \n

SUMMARY:Cranbourne Shire Historical Society - The Cranbourne Meteorite
DESCRIPTION:Cranbourne Shire Historical Society  – The guest speaker for the  November 28\, 2024 meeting is Sean Murphy. 7.30 pm start. He will talk about his book – The Cranbourne Meteorite. \nAuthor and Berwick resident Sean Murphy’s The Cranbourne Meteorite tells the story between local colonial scientists and the British government for the ownership of Cranbourne No.1 fragment in the 1860s. Cranbourne meteorite has 13 fragments that are strewn across a 20-kilometre corridor from Pakenham to Langwarrin. A Casey resident for more than twenty years\, Mr Murphy was always looking for a local topic to explore. In 2018\, Sean stumbled across a podcast episode about a “Cranbourne Meteorite”. He did some investigating at the State Library and online databases to form his story. “There are a lot of meteorite-related books and things out there. But on this topic\, but I was curious that no one had ever really written a book” he said. \nCranbourne Meteorite is known to a lot of people in this area because many years ago\, council put up a display on the South Gippsland Highway in Cranbourne\, hanging some fragments. The Cranbourne Meteorite also explores the stories around other fragments\, meteorites in Australia\, and fun geology and biology knowledge. \nRSVP ESSENTIAL Please email Barry at pauline.freeman2@bigpond.com or Sue at susantobin@bigpond.com. Numbers attending will govern the location of the talk which will be either the Tooradin Hall or the Fishermans Cottage Museum\, Foreshore Road\, Tooradin. SUMMARY:Under Represented Voices in history
DESCRIPTION:Come and learn about pioneering women in Greater Dandenong’s history\, the History of LGBTIQ+ Victoria in 100 Places and Objects project\, and the Australian Queer Archives collection. This program highlights some less represented voices in history. \nSpeakers include Angela Bailey\, a curator\, photographer and creative producer whose practice is informed from a community and cultural perspective. As a young activist participating in the fight for gay law reform in Queensland in the late 1980s to her work as Director of the Visual Arts for the Midsumma Festival in the late 1990s – all have contributed to her ongoing participation in promoting and interpreting our rich and diverse histories by creating exhibitions\, installations\, discourse and public programs of engagement. She has a postgraduate degree in Fine Arts from the VCA\, a Masters of Art Curatorship from the University of Melbourne and is Vice President of the Australian Queer Archives. Angela will be speaking on her work on Heritage Victoria’s A History of LGBTIQ+ Victoria in 100 Places and Objects project\, and the Australian Queer Archives collection. \nOur second speaker\, Christine Keys\, is the sixth generation of the Keys family to live in Greater Dandenong. The family arrived in the area in 1845. She has taken an interest in the local history since her retirement and is currently president of both historical societies in our City.
